And you know we’re talking pastured, cultured butter and organic spring greens. It’s amazing how an eight-hour shift can pay for either a single Jack Rogers sandal or a week of groceries. I am hoping this will be an opportunity to live the value of needing less money by consuming more wisely. I don’t intend on wasting it working jobs for money I would spend on things I don’t need. Having your health restored to you is a miraculous gift. It is the most amazing accomplishment and really puts everything else in perspective. For the first time since being diagnosed four years ago, I can honestly say I do not feel like a sick person.

After four years of being in college with Crohns and never once having full control over exactly what I was eating, I now realize what an extraordinary difference it makes to be strictly Paleo.

On a Paleo note, the stated topic of this blog, I have never felt better. I have everything I need and enough to keep up my wild caught fish and grass fed beef habit. If that means making less money and spending less money, that’s alright. What I do know is that I have a beautiful apartment in Harvard Square for the summer and I want to spend my time doing something where I’m engaged and learning. I left this one unexpectedly and I’m still not positive I did the right thing. It turns out I’m not as comfortable with a plastered on smile for 6 hours as I may have thought, and probably wasn’t cut out to be a hostess. I had Harvard professors screaming at me for extra towels, yoga freaks appalled that they had seen a single ant on the locker room floor, and exercise-disordered businesswomen arguing that if the Wi-Fi wasn’t fixed momentarily they wanted their membership fee back, in cash, within the hour.Īs for the wine bar, I was having a lot of fun getting to know my coworkers and adored the restaurant company I was working for.

I was too tired to really use the perk of a free gym membership that had prompted me to take the front desk job in the first place. The shifts turned out to be terribly timed, there were three days a week when I had to be at the restaurant all night and then open the gym at 5AM. I was going to work at an upscale wine bar and an even snottier womens gym for the summer and keep applying for things in the interim. Finance stuff, policy stuff, sustainable food stuff… none of it was quite panning out. About a month before graduating, I decided that I was not going to kill myself looking for a “real job” when I had been applying for everything I thought was fitting and been unsuccessful. So much has changed since I have updated Coconut and Pearls, this biddy is now a graduate! Although that statement has only been true for less than a month, there have already been some seriously unexpected twists and turns in my summer journey. Looks like what I feel like I’m learning now I had really just forgotten. This is a two year old unpublished draft, but I could not have said it better today.

We always feel like we need to be achieving more, pressing forward in our academic or professional lives, often at the expense of these “small” pleasures that arguably will constitute more aggregate happiness in our lifetimes than all of the moments of recognized achievement put together. What I’ve come to find more and more as I have free time to do whatever I please, is that these things are overlooked as being enough in themselves. Somethings that give you a little buzz and make you think, damn, what a good day to be alive. There are some things that you do on a regular basis that inexplicably bring a smile to your face. Sitting around the kitchen table with friends Watching sailboats from the community sailing docks Reading The New Yorker on a park bench by the Charles Momma and Auntie Dawn, Wedding DayĪ fresh cup of coffee, morning sun, and a slight breeze
